BROWN DEER MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETIC CODE
It is a privilege and an honor for any student to be permitted to represent his/her school in competitive, performance, and leadership roles. Brown Deer High School and Brown Deer Middle School offer numerous opportunities for students to become in involved in school activities with a wide range of teams, clubs, organizations, and positions. This Activities Code provides students and parents with the expectations that we have of students who participants in school activities.
The Activities Program is supervised by the school district’s Activities Director as well as administrators at Brown Deer High School and Brown Deer Middle School. Questions or concerns regarding any school activity should first be directed to the coach/advisor working with the students involved in that particular activity. If any issues remain unresolved after speaking with the coach/advisor, the student or parent should address these concerns to the Activities Director. Ultimately, school administrators at each school should be contacted by students or parents if resolution is not accomplished by working with the coach/advisor and Activities Director. Our goal is to make the Brown Deer Activities Program responsive the needs of students and parents while upholding the high expectations of our schools and the community.
PHILOSOPHY
The School District of Brown Deer sponsors its Activities Program to provide students with additional opportunities for personal growth, self-discipline, skill development, cooperation with others, creativity, and fun. Participation in the Activities Program is intended to foster positive habits and attitudes that will serve as a basis for students to lead productive lives as contributing citizens to our democratic society.
Activities at Brown Deer High School and Brown Deer Middle School are considered extra, voluntary programs that complement the regular curriculum offered to students. Through participation in these activities, each student may be better prepared for life by learning lessons not readily available in the classroom. Our schools have strong traditions of pride and sportsmanship, and each year we rededicate ourselves to these ideals by promoting accomplishment through hard work and citizenship through healthy attitudes. The Brown Deer legacy of competitive spirit, teamwork, honor, and success defines what it means to be a Falcon.
The Activities Program shall always be conducted in accordance with Brown Deer Board of Education policy. Activities shall always be conducted in such a way that they are justifiable as part of our educational program and mission. Participation in any school active is privilege that is awarded only to those students who conduct themselves in accordance with the expectations descried in the Activities Code.

ACADEMIC ELIGILIBILITY
Middle School
ATTENDANCE
Student-athletes are expected to attend all classes or they will be declared ineligible to practice or compete on that day. A student-athlete Maya not regain eligibility to practice or compete until a full day of school attendance has been confirmed. Exceptions are allowed for school-related field trips and activities, confirmed medical/legal appointments, funerals, and emergency situations as verified by a school administrator. Student-athletes are also expected to attend all classes the day following a competition.
SCHOOL CITIZENSHIP AND HAZING
Students are expected to display appropriate school citizenship at all times. Students involved in poor citizenship or hazing may be referred to the Activities Director for a decision regarding the student’s continued eligibility to participate in school athletics.
COMMUNITY CITIZENSHIP
Students are expected to display appropriate citizenship in the community at all times. Any student who commits or is charged by legal authorities with committing a criminal act shall be referred to the Activities Director for a determination of eligibility for continued participation in school athletics. The Activities Director, in consultation with the school administration, shall rule the student ineligible if the student’s conduct is detrimental to others, or if the student’s presence adversely affects team/school morale, disrupts the orderly operation of the school, or interferes with the conduct and discipline of others. This expectation does not apply to minor traffic violations (e.g., speeding tickets).
SPORTSMANSHIP
Students are expected to display the highest standards of good sportsmanship at all times. Unsportsmanlike conduct and /or rude, discourteous behavior that tarnishes the reputation of Brown Deer High School or Brown Deer Middle School will jeopardize a student’s continued eligibility. Unsportsmanlike conduct includes, but is not limited to, the use of profanity and /or related gestures, involvement in any form of brawling, the theft or destruction of any property belonging to another person, school, or community, and /or the display of behavior that does not enhance the positive image of Brown Deer High School or Brown Deer Middle School. Any student who is ejected from a competition or is the subject of correspondence from WIAA shall have his/her case individually reviewed by the Activities Director to determine continued eligibility.
TEAM MEMBERSHIP
Students who voluntarily join an athlete or activity team at Brown Deer High School or Brown Deer Middle School are expected to abide by the following membership rule:
TEAM TRAVEL
Students are required to travel both to and from all team competitions and activity events with the BDHS team using school-sponsored transportation. If a parent of the student wishes to have the student return from a competition or event with the parent due to a special circumstance, a TRAVEL RELEASE FORM must be completed and submitted to the Activities Director for approval.
INJURY
In every sport and activity, particularly the contact sports, there is a risk of injury to participating students. If an injury does occur, the student has a responsibility and an obligation to report the injury to coach or advisor immediately. If the injury requires professional medical attention, the student must return the MEDICAL RELEASE FORM to the team’s coach or activity’s advisor prior to resuming practice or competition.
TOBACCO, ALCOHL, ILLICIT DRUGS
The possession, use, sale, and/or presence at the site of possession use or sale of tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, illicit drugs (including prescription drugs for anyone other than the prescription holder). Is strictly prohibited for students representing Brown Deer High School and /or Brown Deer Middle School. This prohibition is in effect 365 days of the year regardless of whether the student is currently involved on a sports team or school activity. This prohibition applies to all Brown Deer students in grades 7-12 and violations are cumulative for students in grades 7-12. Whenever a student discovers the presence of the prohibited substances at a party or other gathering, it is the student’s responsibility to his/ her team or activity to leave the premised immediately upon the discovery; remaining at the scene after the discovery shall be considered and violation of this prohibition. The consequences of a violation of this section of the Activities Code are as follows:

ACTIVITIES BOARD
The Activities Boards at Brown Deer High School and Brown Deer Middle School have a threefold purpose:
DUE PROCESS & APPEALS PROCEDURE FOR ELIGIBILITY IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Due Process is a procedure, which the courts of law recognize as a necessary part of any rules and regulations. The procedure recognizes the rights of individuals since it outlines recourse if the student or parent/guardian believes that a wrong decision has been made. Outlined below is the procedure for a Brown Deer High School or Brown Deer Middle School student and his/her parents/guardians to follow in appealing a decision relating to eligibility under the Activities Code.
5. If either the grievant(s) or the Activities Board is dissatisfied, either party must request in writing a review by the School District of Brown Deer Superintendent within seven (7) school days of receipt of the summary and decision of the hearing before the Principal. The appeal letter shall also include a copy of the original letter of ineligibility, the original appeal letter, and the official summaries of both hearings.

By volunteering to participate in my school’s Activities Program, I pledge to uphold the high standards of our school and team/activity. Furthermore, I pledge that I will take the expectations expressed in the Activities Code seriously and will report any violations that I am aware of so that the natural consequences will occur to those who have not upheld the school’s standards.
